Most               of               us,               at               some               point               or               another,               have               exhausted               medical               outlets               and               still               have               no               satisfaction.

               Chinese               medicine               is               primarily               based               on               the               "yin"               and               the               "yang".

The               yin               and               yang               sometimes               are               referred               to               as               the               feminine               and               masculine,               the               opposing               forces               of               nature               etc.

The               yin               and               yang               are               actually               the               energy               that               is               vital               for               every               body.

So,               the               yin               and               yang               must               be               balanced.

Balance               is               generally               refers               to               as               "qi".

    About 'college of natural medicine'|A Day Focused On Holistic Health: GOOT Recipe and Natural Medicine School Announcement








    Andrea               looked               surprised               when               I               stated               that               after               nine               months,               one               surgery,               physical               therapy               and               four               doctors,               my               leg               still               throbbed               and               was               swollen.

    She               insisted               that               if               she               made               a               phone               call,               her               brother,               a               doctor,               would               be               able               to               see               me               within               a               couple               of               days               and               would               certainly               find               the               source               of               the               problem.

    When               I               showed               up               at               his               office,               I               was               taken               aback               to               see               that               the               letters               after               his               name               were               D.O.,               not               M.D.

    I               had               no               idea               of               what               those               letters               meant,               let               alone               the               type               of               education               required               to               become               an               osteopath.

    What               is               an               Osteopath?
                   An               osteopath               is               a               doctor               of               osteopathy,               also               known               as               a               doctor               of               osteopathic               medicine               (D.O.).

    According               to               MedLinePlus,               this               professional               is               a               physician               who               is               licensed               to               practice               medicine,               order               prescription               medications               and               perform               surgery.
                   A               parallel               but               better-known               career               is               that               of               a               medical               doctor               (M.D.).

    M.D.s               practice               what               is               known               as               allopathic               medicine.

    Both               types               are               licensed               by               each               state,               as               well               as               the               District               of               Columbia.
                   The               practice               of               osteopathic               medicine               revolves               around               considering               the               whole               state               of               the               patient               rather               than               working               on               just               one               body               system               or               part.

    Osteopaths               frequently               use               a               method               of               treatment               known               as               osteopathic               manipulative               treatment               (OMT),               or               simply               manipulation.

    This               is               a               hands-on               type               of               treatment               that               seeks               to               make               sure               that               all               of               the               body's               systems               of               natural               healing               are               able               to               work               freely.
                   Preparation               for               Becoming               an               Osteopath
                   The               American               Association               of               Colleges               of               Osteopathic               Medicine               (AACOM)               indicates               that               prospective               applicants               must               be               a               graduate               of               a               four-year               college               or               university.

    While               many               osteopathic               students               majored               in               a               science               as               an               undergraduate,               a               number               of               them               hold               liberal               arts               degrees               in               academic               areas               such               as               English.
                   Becoming               an               osteopath               requires               completing               an               education               at               an               osteopathic               medical               school.

    These               institutions               are               not               associated               with               traditional               medical               schools.

    The               American               Osteopathic               Association's               Commission               on               Osteopathic               College               Accreditation               recognizes               26               accredited               colleges               of               osteopathic               medicine               at               34               sites               in               25               states.
                   Admission               to               any               of               them               is               competitive.

    Prospective               students               are               required               to               take               the               Medical               College               Admission               Test               (MCAT),               as               are               undergraduates               seeking               admission               to               M.D.

    programs.
                   The               Curriculum
                   Colleges               and               universities               of               osteopathic               medicine               have               a               four-year               curriculum.

    During               the               first               two               years,               students               focus               on               foundation               courses               in               biomedical               and               clinical               sciences.

    Among               the               areas               they               study               are               anatomy,               physiology,               neuroscience,               gerontology,               pharmacology,               family               medicine,               radiology               and               osteopathic               practices               and               principles.
                   During               the               third               and               fourth               years,               they               complete               core               clinical               clerkships               in               emergency               medicine,               obstetrics               and               gynecology,               family               medicine,               pediatrics,               internal               medicine,               osteopathic               practices,               psychiatry               and               behavioral               science               and               surgery.

    Some               take               specialized               electives               in               areas               such               as               anesthesiology,               nephrology,               pulmonary               medicine               and               cardiology.
                   Most               schools               also               offer               osteopathic               students               opportunities               to               gain               experience               in               rural               or               underserved               medical               care.

    Overall,               training               to               become               an               osteopath               focuses               on               holistic,               patient-centered               and               preventive               considerations.
                   Examinations               and               Licenses
                   For               licensure               as               an               osteopath,               all               jurisdictions               require               graduation               from               an               accredited               U.S.

    college               of               osteopathic               medicine               and               successful               completion               of               a               licensure               exam               sequence               the               respective               state               licensing               board               will               accept.

    Examples               are               the               Comprehensive               Osteopathic               Medical               Licensure               Exam               (COMLEX-USA)               and               the               United               Stated               Medical               Licensure               Examination               (USMLE).

    In               addition,               each               prospective               doctor               of               osteopathy               must               successfully               complete               one               to               three               years               of               graduate               medical               education,               depending               on               the               requirements               of               each               respective               state.
                   After               completing               their               residencies,               prospective               D.O.s               take               board               certification               exams               from               the               specialty               board               responsible               for               overseeing               their               respective               specialties.

    Passing               an               exam               results               in               board               certification,               which               is               often               required               for               privileges               at               hospitals               and               to               participate               in               certain               health               insurance               plans.
                   In               addition               to               the               education               required               to               become               a               Doctor               of               Osteopathy,               professionals               who               are               already               licensed               keep               pace               with               recent               medical               developments               by               enrolling               in               continuing               medical               education               (CME)               programs.

    The               licensing               board               in               each               state               sets               the               requirements               to               keep               a               board               certification               current.
